EARLY CHRISTMAS FOR YOUNG VICTIMS OF ROAD CRASHES AS MEC LEHARI VISITS THEM AT THE SHIMANKANA TABANE HOSPITAL, RUSTENBURG. Christmas came early for children hospitalised due to road accidents. The MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, Sello Lehari visited them at the Job Shimankana Tabane Hospital in Rustenburg on Tuesday morning. Through the Road Traffic Management Corporation’s social cohesion and moral degeneration programme, MEC Lehari handed over educational gifts. This being the time where many will be spending the holidays with loved ones, these children will still be in hospital. MEC Lehari said it is imperative that society plays role in protecting children and giving them love and hope during times of difficulty. “We want to make this day a special one for the children, many of whom will spend Christmas in hospital. We appeal once more to every road user to be responsible and ponder many lives maimed due to reckless driving. We want to give these children hope and a sense of inclusion during a time when they need it the most”, said MEC Lehari during the handover event. The department has recently launched the Provincial “Operation Tlotla Molao” campaign which increases visibility of law enforcement during the festive season. All major arterial routes in the Province including N4, N12, N16 and N18 have recorded increased volume of traffic. “As the Department we are intensifying all our efforts to deal with recklessness on the road. We want to encourage responsible driving and we are appealing to motorists to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and be complaint with the law. We are doing so because we want to save the lives and secure the future of our children”, MEC Lehari added. The social cohesion and moral degeneration programme, an initiative by RTMC seeks to promote road safety by collaboration of efforts. “Road safety is the responsibility of all of us, when officials are enforcing the law; we need to listen to them because by doing so we are saving many innocent people.We as different stakeholders come together to ensure our roads are safe, that people arrive alive and that can only be achieved if we work together. I am pleased that we get to do what we can in one spirit together with the department, the municipality, the hospital and SANTACO”, said RTMC Board Member Mr Eddy Thebe. Acting CEO of the Job Shimankana Tabane Hospital, Ms. Eve Mogorosi expressed gratitude saying the generosity is not only for children who are recipient of gifts but for their care givers as well who go an extra mile to save lives every day. “It is clear that our child patients are cared for not only here at our hospital but also outside by our leaders in society. This validates our efforts as frontline workers who put the lives of our patients first on a daily basis. We would like to thank the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management and RTMC for their generous donation as these gifts will make children’s stay here much more bearable” she said. The visit to the hospital was followed by joint law enforcement road block just outside the hospital along the Nelson Mandela Drive. This is part of the on-going 2020 festive season's road safety and law enforcement campaign throughout the Province, which focuses on all hotspots, exits and entries of towns and cities, rural and farm routes as well as along national, provincial and local routes.
